Laying the Foundation of Chemical Engineering Education in Ethiopia
Reflections on co-founding the pioneer Chemical Engineering Department at Addis Ababa University in 1980, building modern laboratories, and empowering the first generations of Ethiopian chemical engineers.

When my academic journey at Addis Ababa University began in 1980, establishing a dedicated Chemical Engineering Department was more than an academic aspiration—it was a national necessity. Industrialization, sustainable resource processing, and technological self-reliance all depend on engineers trained not only in theory, but in disciplined laboratory inquiry and practical plant design.
Building Laboratories and Academic Capacity
A curriculum on paper cannot form an engineer without living laboratories. Securing DAAD support to equip state-of-the-art unit operations and reaction engineering laboratories allowed our students to test principles with their own hands. Equally vital was investing in people: facilitating international graduate scholarships ensured that bright young Ethiopian faculty members returned to lead, research, and sustain the Department for decades.
Institutions endure when every generation of scholars prepares the ground generously for the generation that follows.
Writing Chemical Reaction Engineering Volumes I and II grew out of those same lecture halls—distilling decades of classroom dialogue into structured textbooks designed specifically to serve engineering students with rigor and clarity.
